Fix a Windows 11 Black Screen With a Cursor After Sign-In

Restore the Windows desktop after sign-in by checking display output, restarting Explorer, and isolating a graphics-driver problem without wiping the PC.

Confirmed working on: Windows 11 · Windows 10

Problem overview

Windows accepts the sign-in credentials but shows a black or blank screen with a movable mouse pointer instead of the desktop. The display may briefly flash, the security screen may still open with Ctrl + Alt + Delete, or the problem may have started after a graphics-driver or Windows update.

This guide is for a screen that still produces an image or cursor. If the monitor reports No signal, the firmware logo never appears, or the screen is physically damaged, use a display or hardware diagnostic guide instead.

Common causes

  • Windows Explorer did not start after sign-in
  • Windows selected an unavailable external display
  • The graphics driver stopped responding or became incompatible after an update
  • A startup application blocks the desktop shell
  • A recent system change damaged Windows components
Caution

Do not reinstall Windows or reset the PC as a first step. If BitLocker is enabled, confirm that the recovery key is available before entering Windows Recovery or changing startup settings.

Step 1: Reset only the display path

  1. Disconnect docks, display adapters, and unnecessary external monitors. Leave the keyboard, mouse, and power connected.
  2. Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B once. Windows should play a short sound or flicker while it resets the graphics driver.
  3. Wait 15 seconds. If the desktop does not appear, press Windows + P, then press P once and Enter. Repeat slowly up to three times to cycle display modes.
  4. If an external monitor is connected, verify its selected input and cable before continuing.

Stop cycling display modes when the internal display appears. These shortcuts do not install, remove, or permanently configure a driver.

Step 2: Restart the Windows desktop shell

  1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete. If the security screen opens, choose Task Manager.
  2. In Task Manager, select More details if that option appears.
  3. Find Windows Explorer under Processes, select it, and choose Restart task.
  4. If Windows Explorer is absent, choose Run new task, enter explorer.exe, and press Enter.
  5. Wait for the taskbar and desktop icons to load, then save any open work.

If explorer.exe opens the desktop but the black screen returns at every sign-in, continue. That pattern points to a startup item, profile, or damaged system component rather than the display itself.

Step 3: Isolate a recent graphics-driver change

Use this step only when the issue began immediately after a graphics-driver update and Task Manager is accessible.

  1. In Task Manager, choose Run new task, enter devmgmt.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Expand Display adapters, open the installed adapter, and select the Driver tab.
  3. If Roll Back Driver is available, note the current driver version, choose rollback, and explain that the previous version was more stable.
  4. Restart once and test sign-in again.

Rollback is reversible through Windows Update or the PC/GPU manufacturer’s signed installer. Do not use an unrelated driver package or a firmware updater for this symptom.

Step 4: Test Safe Mode without changing boot firmware

If the desktop never loads normally, enter Windows Recovery from the sign-in screen by holding Shift while choosing Power → Restart. Select Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart, then choose Safe Mode with Networking.

Sign in and observe the result:

  • If Safe Mode works, disable only recently added startup software or roll back the recent display driver.
  • If Safe Mode has the same black screen, use System Restore from Advanced options only when a restore point predates the problem.
  • If recovery requests BitLocker and the key is unavailable, stop rather than guessing or changing TPM/Secure Boot settings.
Expert Tip

System Restore targets system files, drivers, and settings. Review the affected-programs list before confirming it, and keep the computer connected to power until it finishes.

Verification steps

  1. Restart normally and sign in twice, not just once.
  2. Confirm that the desktop, taskbar, Start menu, and Windows + E all load without manually running explorer.exe.
  3. Reconnect one external display or dock at a time and repeat sign-in.
  4. Open Device Manager and confirm the display adapter has no warning symbol.
  5. If the screen goes black again, record whether it occurs before sign-in, after sign-in, or only after reconnecting a display; that distinction determines the next diagnostic path.

Sources

Confirm the result

  1. Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
  2. Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
  3. If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
  4. If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.

Questions about this fix

Is a black screen with a cursor the same as a failed monitor?

Not usually. A movable cursor means Windows is producing an image, so a stalled desktop process, incorrect display mode, or graphics driver is more likely than a completely dead display.

Will restarting Windows Explorer delete open files?

Restarting Explorer closes File Explorer windows and reloads the desktop, taskbar, and Start menu. It does not erase files, but unsaved file-operation dialogs may close.

When should I stop and seek repair help?

Stop if the firmware logo never appears, the screen shows artifacts, the drive makes abnormal sounds, the device smells hot, or Windows Recovery asks for an unavailable BitLocker key.
