Problem overview

Your computer fails to detect a second monitor after connecting it. The external display shows a “No Signal” message or remains completely black, and Windows Display Settings does not show multiple screens.

Common causes

  • Improperly seated or faulty HDMI/DisplayPort cable
  • Outdated or missing graphics card drivers
  • Connecting to a disabled motherboard port instead of the GPU
  • Windows display projection mode set to “PC screen only”

Solution 1: Change projection settings

  1. Press Win + P to open the Windows projection menu.
  2. A sidebar will appear on the right side of the screen.
  3. Select Extend to expand your desktop across both screens.
  4. If the monitor activates, the connection is working properly.
Expert Tip

You can also select Duplicate if you want both monitors to show the exact same image.

Solution 2: Force Windows to detect the display

  1. Right-click an empty area on your desktop and select Display settings.
  2. Scroll down to the Multiple displays section.
  3. Click the Detect button.
  4. If Windows finds the monitor, arrange the displays in the visual layout to match your physical setup.

Solution 3: Verify physical connections

  1. Unplug the video cable from both the monitor and the computer.
  2. Reconnect the cable, ensuring it snaps or screws securely into place.
  3. Check the physical buttons on your monitor and verify that the correct input source (e.g., HDMI 1 vs DisplayPort) is selected.
  4. Try using a different video cable or connecting to a different port on the computer.

Solution 4: Connect to the correct GPU port

  1. Look at the back of your desktop computer tower.
  2. Locate the dedicated graphics card, usually positioned horizontally lower down on the case.
  3. Ensure the monitor cable is plugged into the graphics card, rather than the vertical ports attached to the motherboard higher up.
  4. Restart your computer after swapping the ports.

Solution 5: Roll back or install GPU drivers

  1. Right-click the Start menu and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand the Display adapters section.
  3. Right-click your graphics card and select Properties.
  4. Navigate to the Driver tab.
  5. Click Roll Back Driver to revert a problematic recent update.
  6. If the button is greyed out, visit NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel’s website to download and install the latest graphics driver package.
Caution

Do not rely on Windows Update for the latest graphics drivers. Always use the manufacturer’s official installer or software application to ensure proper multi-monitor support.

Confirm the result

  1. Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
  2. Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
  3. If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
  4. If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.

Questions about this fix

Why does my second monitor say 'No Signal'?

This indicates the monitor has power but is not receiving video data from the computer, often due to a loose cable or wrong input source selected on the monitor.

Can I use motherboard display ports while having a dedicated GPU?

Most BIOS settings disable integrated graphics ports when a dedicated graphics card is present. You must connect all monitors to the dedicated GPU.
