Fix Discord Not Detecting Your Microphone on Windows 11

Problem overview

Discord shows no input level, displays a message that it cannot detect the microphone, or other people cannot hear you even though headphones and output audio work. The failure may affect the desktop app, the browser version, one server, or every voice application.

The fastest safe diagnosis is to test the microphone outside Discord first. That separates a Windows/device problem from a Discord setting or channel-permission problem and prevents unnecessary driver changes.

Common causes

• The wrong Discord Input Device is selected
• Windows blocks microphone or desktop-app access
• Discord is muted, set to Push to Talk, or server-muted
• The affected channel denies Connect or Speak permission
• Browser site permission is blocked
• Noise suppression or voice settings became misconfigured
• The microphone is disconnected, muted in hardware, or not detected by Windows

Step 1: Prove whether Windows receives microphone input

1. Reconnect the headset or USB microphone and check its physical mute switch.
2. Open Settings → System → Sound → Input.
3. Select the intended microphone and speak while watching the input-level meter.
4. If there is no movement, select the device, confirm its input volume is above zero, and test another known-good port. Avoid USB hubs during the test.
5. Test once in Sound Recorder. If Windows cannot record audio there, fix the device or Windows input problem before changing Discord.

If the Windows meter moves and Sound Recorder captures speech, the hardware and basic driver path work. Continue inside Discord.

Step 2: Check Windows microphone privacy controls

1. Open Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone.
2. Turn on Microphone access.
3. Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
4. For the installed Discord desktop client, also turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone.
5. Fully quit Discord from the system tray and reopen it after changing permission.

Desktop apps do not always appear as individual toggles. The desktop-app access switch controls that class of application, while browser Discord also needs permission at the browser/site level.

Step 3: Select and test the input in Discord

1. Open User Settings → Voice & Video → Voice.
2. Set Input Device to the same microphone that moved in Windows Sound settings. Do not rely on Default while diagnosing.
3. Raise Input Volume to a sensible level and use Discord’s Mic Test.
4. Check Input Mode. Choose Voice Activity for the test, or verify the Push to Talk shortcut if that mode is intentional.
5. Confirm the microphone icon is not muted and the headset icon is not deafened.

If Mic Test works but people in one server cannot hear you, inspect the channel rather than reinstalling the app. A server administrator may need to remove a server mute or grant Connect and Speak permissions.

Step 4: Reset only Discord’s voice configuration

If the correct input is selected but Mic Test remains silent, open User Settings → Voice & Video → Debugging and choose Reset Voice and Video Settings. Re-select the microphone and run Mic Test again.

Temporarily disable Discord noise suppression only for comparison if speech cuts in and out; restore the preferred setting after the test. Do not disable Windows security software, install codec packs, or replace a working audio driver solely for a Discord-only symptom.

Step 5: Check browser permission when using discord.com

For Discord in a browser:

1. Open https://discord.com/app and select the site-permission icon beside the address.
2. Set Microphone to Allow and select the correct device in the browser if offered.
3. Reload the Discord tab and repeat Mic Test.
4. Close other tabs or applications that may be using the microphone exclusively, then test again.

If the desktop app works but one browser does not, the remaining issue is browser permission or selection—not the Windows driver.

Verification steps

1. Confirm the Windows input meter and Discord Mic Test both react to normal speech.
2. Join a private test call or a channel where you have Speak permission.
3. Verify the green speaking indicator appears and another participant can hear a short test sentence.
4. Quit Discord completely, reopen it, and confirm it retains the intended Input Device.
5. If only one server or channel still fails, provide its administrator with the channel name and permission result rather than changing system audio settings again.
