Before you begin
Problem overview
Web applications like Google Meet or Discord run in your browser but cannot access your microphone or camera. The browser displays an error indicating that permissions were denied, preventing your video and audio from transmitting.
Common causes
- Accidental click on “Block” when prompted by the site
- Operating system privacy settings restricting the browser
- Antivirus software blocking webcam access
- Another application holding exclusive control of the camera
Solution 1: Check browser site permissions
- Navigate to the web application you are trying to use.
- Click the padlock icon (or site information icon) on the left side of the URL bar.
- Look for the Camera and Microphone toggles or dropdowns.
- Ensure both are set to Allow.
- Refresh the webpage to apply the new permissions.
If the options are missing, click Site settings in the same menu to view the full list of permissions and reset them.
Solution 2: Clear site permissions and re-grant
- Open your browser settings and search for
Site Settings(Chrome/Edge) orPrivacy & Security(Firefox). - Locate the specific website in the list of recent permissions.
- Click the trash can icon or Reset permissions to clear saved rules.
- Return to the web application and trigger an action that requires the camera.
- Click Allow when the permission prompt appears at the top of the browser.
Solution 3: Check Windows Privacy settings
- Press
Win + Ito open Windows Settings. - Navigate to Privacy & security > Camera.
- Toggle on Camera access and Let apps access your camera.
- Scroll down and verify Let desktop apps access your camera is enabled, ensuring your browser is listed below it.
- Repeat these steps under Privacy & security > Microphone.
Solution 4: Close apps with exclusive access
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Escto open Task Manager. - Look for applications like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or OBS Studio that might be using the camera in the background.
- Right-click these applications and select End task.
- Restart your browser and test the camera again.
Some strict privacy tools and antivirus software feature a “Webcam Shield” that overrides browser permissions. You must whitelist your browser in the security software itself.
Confirm the result
- Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
- Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
- If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
- If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.
Questions about this fix
Why does the browser ask for permission every time I join a meeting?
You may not have checked the box to remember your decision, or your browser is configured to clear site data on exit.
Does incognito mode block camera access?
No, but it forces the browser to prompt for permission again since it ignores previously saved preferences.
