Problem overview
Your Android screen does not register taps, registers them in the wrong place, or taps itself erratically (ghost touches).
Common causes
- Physical damage or micro-cracks in the digitizer
- Moisture or dirt on the screen
- Low-quality or excessively thick screen protectors
- High CPU usage causing the OS to freeze
Solution 1: Force reboot the device
- Press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons simultaneously.
- Continue holding for 10-15 seconds until the screen goes black.
- Wait for the phone to restart. This clears temporary OS freezes mimicking a dead screen.
Solution 2: Clean and inspect hardware
- Remove any screen protectors or thick cases.
- Clean the screen thoroughly with a microfiber cloth and a tiny amount of isopropyl alcohol.
- Ensure there is no moisture trapped in the edges of the screen bezel.
Solution 3: Enable Developer visualizers
- Go to Settings > About phone and tap Build number 7 times.
- Go to Settings > System > Developer options.
- Scroll to the Input section and toggle on Show taps and Pointer location.
- Swipe your finger across the screen. If the line breaks or jumps, you likely have a failing hardware digitizer requiring physical repair.
If you determine the issue is hardware-related and the phone is out of warranty, back up your data immediately before the screen fails completely.
Solution 4: Boot in Safe Mode
- Power off the phone, then turn it back on.
- As soon as the boot logo appears, press and hold Volume Down.
- When the system loads, look for the Safe mode watermark.
- If touch works perfectly here, a rogue app is monopolizing the CPU and causing input lag. Uninstall recently added apps.
Confirm the result
- Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
- Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
- If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
- If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.
