Problem overview
Your Android device stutters when scrolling, takes a long time to open apps, or feels generally sluggish and unresponsive to touch inputs.
Common causes
- Internal storage is almost completely full
- Heavy widgets and live wallpapers consuming resources
- Too many background processes running
- System animations slowing down the perceived speed
Solution 1: Free up internal storage
- Open Settings > Storage.
- Check your available space. You need at least 15-20% free space for Android to perform optimal garbage collection on flash memory.
- Delete large downloaded files, old videos, or unused applications to free up space.
Use the Files by Google app to quickly identify large files and duplicate media that can be safely deleted.
Solution 2: Disable system animations
- Go to Settings > About phone and tap Build number seven times to enable Developer options.
- Navigate back to Settings > System > Developer options.
- Scroll down to the Drawing section.
- Set Window animation scale, Transition animation scale, and Animator duration scale to .5x or Animation off.
- Your phone will immediately feel faster and more responsive.
Solution 3: Remove heavy launcher elements
- Long-press on your home screen.
- Remove unused widgets, particularly those that update constantly like weather or news feeds.
- Change your wallpaper from a Live Wallpaper to a static image.
- Uninstall carrier or manufacturer bloatware that you do not use via Settings > Apps.
Confirm the result
- Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
- Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
- If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
- If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.
