Problem overview
You receive a ‘Storage space running out’ warning. You cannot install new apps, take photos, or receive software updates due to insufficient storage.
Common causes
- Large accumulated media files in messaging apps (like WhatsApp)
- Bloated app caches over months of usage
- Downloaded offline maps or streaming media
- Forgotten files in the Downloads folder
Solution 1: Use Files by Google to clear junk
- Open the Files by Google app (install it from the Play Store if you don’t have it).
- Tap the Clean tab at the bottom.
- Review the suggestions for Junk files, Old screenshots, and Large files.
- Select files you no longer need and tap Delete.
Solution 2: Clear WhatsApp and messaging media
- Open WhatsApp.
- Go to Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage.
- Review items under Larger than 5 MB or tap individual chats.
- Select and delete heavy videos and forwarded media.
To prevent this in the future, go to WhatsApp settings and disable media auto-download for videos.
Solution 3: Offload photos to the cloud
- Open Google Photos.
- Tap your profile icon in the top right.
- Ensure backup is complete, then select Free up space.
- Tap Free up space to delete local copies of photos that are already safely backed up to your Google account.
Solution 4: Clear massive app caches
- Open Settings > Apps > See all apps.
- Sort by size if possible, or look for usual suspects: Chrome, TikTok, Spotify, Instagram.
- Tap the app, select Storage & cache, and tap Clear cache.
- Repeat for other large applications.
Confirm the result
- Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
- Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
- If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
- If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.
