Problem overview
Contactless payments fail at checkout registers. Google Wallet does not respond when tapped against a terminal, or you receive read errors when trying to scan NFC tags.
Common causes
- NFC toggle is disabled in settings
- Physical interference from a thick phone case or magnetic mount
- Another app overriding the default payment service
- Phone failing Google’s security checks (Play Integrity)
Solution 1: Verify NFC and default payment settings
- Open Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences.
- Tap NFC and ensure the toggle is turned ON.
- Tap Contactless payments.
- Ensure Google Wallet (or your preferred banking app) is selected as the Payment default.
If NFC is on but not working, toggle it off, restart your phone, and toggle it back on.
Solution 2: Remove physical interference
- Remove any thick, rugged, or metallic phone case.
- Remove wallet cases holding credit cards, as the chips in physical cards interfere with the phone’s NFC signal.
- If you have a magnetic metal plate glued to the back of the phone for a car mount, remove it.
- Tap the upper half of the phone firmly against the terminal.
Solution 3: Check Play Protect and Security status
- Open the Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon and select Play Protect.
- Ensure your device is certified and has no harmful apps.
- If your phone is rooted, running a custom ROM, or has an unlocked bootloader, Google Wallet will block NFC payments. You must relock the bootloader or use root-hiding modules to restore functionality.
Confirm the result
- Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
- Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
- If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
- If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.
