Problem overview

During phone calls or voice recordings, the other person cannot hear you, or your voice sounds muffled and distant.

Common causes

  • Debris or pocket lint blocking the microphone port
  • Missing microphone permissions for the specific app
  • Bluetooth headset hijacking the audio route
  • Conflicts from third-party call recording software

Solution 1: Clean the microphone port

  1. Locate the primary microphone hole (usually a tiny pinhole at the bottom edge of the phone next to the USB port).
  2. Carefully use a soft-bristled toothbrush to dislodge any lint.
  3. Use a can of compressed air with the nozzle held an inch away to blow out dust. Do not stick a needle in the hole, as this will puncture the mic membrane.

Solution 2: Check app permissions

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy > Permission manager.
  2. Tap Microphone.
  3. Ensure the app you are trying to use (e.g., Phone, WhatsApp) is listed under Allowed.
  4. If it is under Not allowed, tap it and change the setting to Allow only while using the app.
Expert Tip

Test the microphone using the built-in Voice Recorder app. If it works there but not on phone calls, the issue is cellular reception or the Phone app, not the hardware.

Solution 3: Disable Bluetooth connections

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings.
  2. Turn off Bluetooth.
  3. Sometimes, the phone routes audio to a paired Bluetooth device (like earbuds still in their case) instead of the internal microphone.

Solution 4: Remove call recording apps

  1. Go to Settings > Apps.
  2. Locate any third-party call recording applications.
  3. Uninstall them, restart the phone, and test a normal phone call.

Confirm the result

  1. Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
  2. Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
  3. If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
  4. If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.
