Problem overview

During voice calls, you experience dropouts, static, echoing, or robotic voices. In severe cases, the call drops completely after a few minutes.

Common causes

  • Poor cellular reception or network congestion
  • VoLTE (Voice over LTE) interoperability issues between carriers
  • Physical obstructions blocking the microphone or earpiece
  • Misconfigured APN network settings

Solution 1: Toggle VoLTE or Wi-Fi Calling

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet.
  2. Tap Mobile network or SIMs.
  3. Locate VoLTE or 4G Calling and toggle it off. Test a call. Sometimes, dropping back to 3G provides a clearer, more stable voice connection if the LTE tower is congested.
  4. Alternatively, if cellular signal is weak, turn ON Wi-Fi Calling to route calls through your home network.

Solution 2: Remove phone cases and clean ports

  1. Remove any thick or rugged phone case. Cases without proper acoustic channels can reflect speaker sound directly back into the noise-canceling microphone, causing echoes for the other person.
  2. Clean the earpiece grill at the top of the phone with a dry, soft-bristled brush.
Expert Tip

Try turning on the speakerphone or using a Bluetooth headset. If the call quality is perfect via a headset, the issue is hardware-related (a failing internal microphone or earpiece).

Solution 3: Reset network settings

  1. Go to Settings > System > Reset options.
  2. Tap Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth.
  3. Confirm the reset.
  4. Restart the phone. This clears out corrupted carrier configurations and forces the phone to download fresh APN settings from the cell tower.

Confirm the result

  1. Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
  2. Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
  3. If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
  4. If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.
