Fix VB-Cable Virtual Audio Driver Not Working

How to fix VB-Cable virtual audio routing issues by matching sample rates and running the installer as administrator.

Confirmed working on: Windows 10 · Windows 11

Problem overview

You have installed VB-Cable to route audio between applications, but the audio is not passing through. The sound might be completely silent, heavily distorted, or applications might throw errors when trying to select the virtual cable as an input or output device.

Common causes

  • Running the VB-Cable installer without administrator privileges
  • Mismatched sample rates between the virtual cable and physical hardware
  • Applications taking Exclusive Control of the audio device and blocking the routing

Solution 1: Reinstall VB-Cable as Administrator

If the driver did not install correctly, it will appear broken in the sound control panel.

  1. Extract the downloaded VB-Cable .zip file completely. Do not run the setup from within the zip archive.
  2. Right-click on VBCABLE_Setup_x64.exe and select Run as administrator.
  3. Click the Install Driver button.
  4. Restart your computer immediately after the installation finishes.

Solution 2: Match Sample Rates

Windows audio breaks down when different devices try to process audio at different frequencies.

  1. Press Win + R, type mmsys.cpl, and press Enter to open the legacy Sound Control Panel.
  2. Go to the Playback tab, right-click CABLE Input, and select Properties.
  3. Go to the Advanced tab. Take note of the Default Format (usually 2 channel, 24 bit, 48000 Hz).
  4. Go back to the Sound Control Panel, switch to the Recording tab, and right-click CABLE Output.
  5. Go to the Advanced tab and ensure the format perfectly matches the Playback setting.
  6. Do the same for your physical headphones or speakers. Everything in the chain must run at the same sample rate (44100 Hz or 48000 Hz).
Expert Tip

While on the Advanced tab, uncheck “Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device.” This stops programs like Discord or OBS from locking the virtual cable and breaking the audio stream for other apps.

Solution 3: Set default devices correctly

  1. In the Sound Control Panel, ensure CABLE Input is NOT set as your Default Playback Device unless you explicitly want all PC audio routed through it.
  2. Ensure you assign the inputs and outputs within your specific software (like OBS, Voicemeeter, or Zoom) rather than relying on Windows default routing.

Confirm the result

  1. Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
  2. Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
  3. If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
  4. If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.

Questions about this fix

Why do I hear crackling through VB-Cable?

Crackling audio is almost always caused by a sample rate mismatch between the input device, the VB-Cable, and the output device.

Do I need to reboot after installing VB-Cable?

Yes, rebooting is required to ensure the virtual audio drivers hook into the Windows audio subsystem correctly.
