Fix Dead or Unresponsive USB Ports

Problem overview

You plug a mouse, keyboard, or flash drive into your computer, but the device receives no power and is not recognized by Windows. This can affect individual ports or entire arrays of USB hubs.

Common causes

  • USB Selective Suspend aggressively disabling ports
  • Driver corruption in the USB Root Hubs
  • Disconnected front panel headers on the motherboard
  • Static buildup requiring a power drain

Solution 1: Disable USB Selective Suspend

  1. Press Win + S, type Edit power plan, and press Enter.
  2. Click on Change advanced power settings.
  3. Expand USB settings, then expand USB selective suspend setting.
  4. Change the setting to Disabled.
  5. Click Apply and OK, then restart your computer.
Expert Tip

Selective Suspend is a power-saving feature that cuts power to idle USB devices. Sometimes, it fails to wake them up, making the port seem dead.

Solution 2: Reinstall USB Root Hubs

  1. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers section.
  3. Right-click the first item labeled USB Root Hub and select Uninstall device.
  4. Repeat this process for every USB Root Hub listed.
  5. Restart your computer. Windows will automatically reinstall fresh drivers upon boot.

Solution 3: Perform a power drain

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Unplug the power cable from the back of the desktop (or remove the charger and battery if it is a laptop).
  3. Press and hold the physical power button on the machine for 30 to 60 seconds to drain residual static charge from the motherboard capacitors.
  4. Plug the system back in, turn it on, and test the ports.
Caution

Inspect the interior of the dead USB port with a flashlight. If the pins are bent or the plastic spacer is missing, do not use the port. A shorted USB port can damage devices or prevent the entire computer from booting.

Confirm the result

  1. Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
  2. Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
  3. If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
  4. If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.

Front ports rely on an internal cable connecting to the motherboard. That cable may be loose or disconnected.

Can a USB port physically break?

Yes, the plastic tab inside the port can snap, shorting the pins and disabling the port permanently.
