Troubleshoot Internet Speeds Slower Than ISP Plan

The network connection is significantly slower than the subscribed ISP tier, caused by Wi-Fi interference, bandwidth hogging, or hardware limitations.

Confirmed working on: Windows 10 · Windows 11 · macOS

Problem overview

Your internet connection is performing well below the speed tier you pay your ISP for. Downloads take longer than expected, and video streams may buffer or drop in quality.

Common causes

  • Testing over a weak or congested 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band
  • Background apps or devices consuming heavy bandwidth
  • Outdated router firmware or hardware bottlenecks
  • ISP network congestion or active bandwidth throttling

Solution 1: Test with a wired Ethernet connection

  1. Connect your computer directly to the router using a Cat 5e or Cat 6 Ethernet cable.
  2. Turn off Wi-Fi on your computer to ensure it uses the wired connection.
  3. Run a speed test at speedtest.net or fast.com.
  4. If the wired speed matches your plan, the issue is isolated to your Wi-Fi environment.
  5. If the wired speed is still slow, the problem lies with your router, modem, or ISP.
Expert Tip

When testing, make sure no other devices on your network are downloading large files or streaming 4K video.

Solution 2: Switch to the 5GHz Wi-Fi band

  1. Open your device’s Wi-Fi settings.
  2. Look for your network name with a -5G or 5GHz suffix (if your router separates the bands).
  3. Connect to the 5GHz network.
  4. Run another speed test. 5GHz provides much faster speeds and less interference than 2.4GHz, though it has shorter range.
  5. If your router uses “Smart Connect” to blend the bands, try disabling it in the router settings to force a 5GHz connection.

Solution 3: Check for background downloads

  1. On Windows, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Click the Network column header to sort apps by network usage.
  3. Identify any applications (like game launchers or cloud sync tools) consuming high bandwidth.
  4. Right-click the offending app and select End task, or pause the download within the app.

Solution 4: Update router firmware

  1. Log into your router’s admin interface (typically 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).
  2. Navigate to the Administration, System, or Advanced settings.
  3. Locate the Firmware Update section.
  4. Click Check for updates and install any available firmware patches.
  5. The router will reboot. Test your speeds again once it comes back online.
Caution

If you are still experiencing slow speeds after ruling out hardware and local network issues, contact your ISP. They may need to reprovision your modem or investigate line degradation outside your home.

Confirm the result

  1. Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
  2. Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
  3. If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
  4. If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.

Questions about this fix

Why is my Wi-Fi speed slower than Ethernet?

Wi-Fi is subject to wireless interference, physical distance, and router overhead, making it inherently slower than a direct wired connection.

Can a bad router cause slow speeds?

Yes, older routers may lack the processing power or modern wireless standards needed to support high-speed internet plans.
