Fix RAM Not Detected or Usable (Hardware Guide)
Troubleshoot and fix issues where installed RAM is not detected or usable by Windows.
Confirmed working on: Windows 10 · Windows 11
Before you begin
Problem overview
Your computer fails to recognize all installed memory, or Windows reports a large portion of RAM as “Hardware Reserved”. This prevents your system from utilizing its full memory capacity, impacting performance.
Common causes
- Improperly seated RAM modules
- Dust or debris in the DIMM slots
- Incorrect BIOS configurations (XMP/EXPO issues)
- Incompatible memory combinations
Solution 1: Reseat and clean the RAM
- Power down your PC and unplug the power cord from the wall.
- Press the release tabs on the ends of the RAM slots to remove the sticks.
- Gently rub the gold contact pins on the RAM modules with a clean pencil eraser to remove oxidation.
- Blow out the motherboard slots with compressed air.
- Reinsert the RAM firmly until the tabs click into place.
If you are using two sticks of RAM on a board with four slots, place them in slots A2 and B2 (usually the 2nd and 4th slots from the CPU) for proper dual-channel operation.
Solution 2: Test sticks individually
- Remove all but one stick of RAM from the motherboard.
- Power on the PC and check if the memory is detected correctly in the BIOS.
- Turn off the PC and swap the stick with another to test each module.
- If one stick consistently fails to detect or boot, that specific module is defective.
Solution 3: Reset the BIOS configuration
- Enter your motherboard BIOS by pressing
DelorF2during startup. - Locate the option to Load Optimized Defaults or clear the CMOS by shorting the appropriate pins on the motherboard.
- Save and exit the BIOS.
- If the RAM is now fully detected, re-enter the BIOS and enable XMP (Intel) or EXPO (AMD) to run the RAM at its rated speed.
If you adjust memory timings or voltages manually instead of using XMP, doing so incorrectly can lead to severe system instability and data corruption.
Confirm the result
- Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
- Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
- If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
- If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.
Questions about this fix
Why does Windows say half my RAM is hardware reserved?
This usually points to a poorly seated RAM stick or a bent pin in the CPU socket.
Can I mix different brands of RAM?
While possible, mixing kits can cause instability or failure to boot. It is best to use matched sets.
