Diagnose Printer Hardware Faults and Paper Jams

Problem overview
Your printer refuses to print, constantly reporting paper jams, spewing out blank pages, or grinding loudly when initiating a print job. These hardware faults halt productivity entirely.
Common causes
- Improperly loaded or damp paper
- Dirty or degraded rubber pickup rollers
- Clogged printhead nozzles (Inkjet)
- Torn scraps of paper blocking internal sensors
Solution 1: Safely clear a paper jam
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the wall.
- Open the main access door and locate the jammed paper.
- Gently pull the paper out in the direction of the normal paper path (usually forward or downward). Never pull it backward against the gears.
- Use a flashlight to inspect for tiny scraps of torn paper blocking the optical sensors in the paper path.
- Close the doors, plug it in, and turn it on.
If a laser printer jams just before the fuser unit (where the paper exits), wait 10 minutes before reaching in. The fuser rollers get extremely hot and will burn you.
Solution 2: Clean the pickup rollers
- If the printer makes a grinding noise but fails to grab paper, the rubber rollers are dirty or slick.
- Unplug the printer and remove the paper tray.
- Locate the rubber pickup rollers (usually grey or black).
- Take a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water and wipe the rollers to remove paper dust and restore grip.
Solution 3: Run a self-test page
- To isolate a hardware issue from a PC driver issue, run an offline self-test.
- Hold down the physical Resume or Information button on the printer for 5 seconds (check your manual for the exact combo).
- If the self-test page prints flawlessly, the hardware is fine; you need to reinstall the printer drivers on your PC.
- If the page comes out blank or streaky (inkjet), run the built-in printhead cleaning utility via the printer’s menu screen.
Avoid touching the thin, transparent encoder strip running behind the printhead carriage on inkjet printers. Getting oil or grease on it will cause the printer to lose track of the carriage, resulting in skewed printing.

- Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
- Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
- If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
- If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.
