Problem overview

When you try to print a document, nothing happens. Opening the Windows Printers & Scanners menu shows your printer listed with a grey “Driver is unavailable” subtext. The printer cannot be selected as a destination in any application.

Common causes

  • Windows Update downloading a corrupted or incompatible generic printer driver
  • Print spooler cache becoming corrupted due to a stuck print job
  • Upgrading to a new version of Windows while using an older, incompatible driver

Solution 1: Clear the Print Spooler cache

Before installing new drivers, you must clear out the corrupted files blocking the connection.

  1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Scroll down to the Print Spooler service. Right-click it and select Stop. Leave the Services window open.
  3. Open File Explorer and navigate to: C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\x64 (If you are on 32-bit Windows, look in the \W32X86 folder instead)
  4. Delete all the contents inside this folder. If prompted for administrator permissions, click Continue.
  5. Go back to the Services window, right-click Print Spooler, and select Start.

Solution 2: Remove and reinstall the printer manually

Do not rely on Windows to find the driver automatically.

  1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  2. Click on the unavailable printer and select Remove.
  3. Open your web browser and go to the official support website for your printer manufacturer (HP, Canon, Brother, Epson).
  4. Search for your exact printer model and download the full driver software package for your version of Windows.
  5. Run the downloaded installer. Wait for the setup prompt to ask you to connect the printer before turning it on or plugging in the USB cable.
Expert Tip

If your printer is very old and has no Windows 10/11 drivers on the manufacturer website, try installing the driver in Compatibility Mode for Windows 8 or Windows 7.

Confirm the result

  1. Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
  2. Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
  3. If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
  4. If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.

Questions about this fix

Why does it say unavailable when the printer worked yesterday?

A background Windows Update often replaces the working printer driver with an incomplete generic version, breaking the connection.

Is it safe to delete files in the spool folder?

Yes, the spool directory only stores temporary print jobs and cached driver files. Deleting them is safe when the spooler service is stopped.
