Fix OneDrive Stuck on Processing Changes

Problem overview

OneDrive displays a “Processing changes” message but never completes the sync. The application hangs while trying to reconcile local and cloud files.

Common causes

• Invalid file names or characters in the sync folder
• A hidden temporary file locking the sync process
• A corrupted OneDrive sync cache
• Storage quota limits reached in your Microsoft account

Solution 1: Reset the OneDrive application

1. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
2. Enter the reset command:

%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset

3. Press Enter. The OneDrive icon in the system tray will disappear and reappear after a minute or two.
4. Open the Start Menu and launch OneDrive manually if the icon does not reappear.

Solution 2: Unlink and relink your account

1. Click the OneDrive icon in your system tray.
2. Click the Help & Settings gear icon, then select Settings.
3. Go to the Account tab.
4. Click Unlink this PC and confirm your choice.
5. Sign in with your Microsoft account credentials when the setup wizard appears.
6. Choose your existing OneDrive folder location to merge the files and avoid redownloading them.

Solution 3: Check for locked or unsupported files

1. Open your OneDrive folder in File Explorer.
2. Look for files with a red X or a sync pending icon.
3. Move these specific files out of the OneDrive folder to your Desktop.
4. Wait for OneDrive to display an “Up to date” status.
5. Rename the problematic files to remove any special characters like <, >, :, ", |, ?, *, or /.
6. Move the files back into the OneDrive folder to sync them.
