Problem overview

Your laptop becomes excessively hot to the touch and randomly shuts down without warning. This happens when the internal cooling system fails to dissipate heat efficiently, triggering a thermal trip to protect hardware.

  • Dried or degraded thermal paste on the CPU and GPU
  • Blocked airflow from using the laptop on a soft surface

Solution 1: Clean the cooling system

  1. Turn off your laptop and disconnect the power adapter.
  2. Remove the bottom panel of your laptop using a suitable screwdriver.
  3. Locate the cooling fans and heatsink fins.
  4. Hold the fan blades gently to prevent them from spinning, then use compressed air to blow out the dust.
  5. Reassemble the laptop and test the temperatures.

Use a program like HWiNFO64 to monitor your CPU and GPU temperatures before and after cleaning to measure the improvement.

Solution 2: Adjust power and frequency limits

  1. Open the Start menu, type Control Panel, and press Enter.
  2. Navigate to Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
  3. Select Balanced or your system’s recommended profile.
  4. Click Change plan settings next to the active profile, then Change advanced power settings.
  5. Expand Processor power management and set Maximum processor state to 99% to disable aggressive turbo boosting.

Solution 3: Replace thermal paste

  1. Open your laptop and remove the heatsink assembly over the CPU and GPU.
  2. Clean the old, dried thermal paste from the chips and heatsink using 90% isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth.
  3. Apply a small, pea-sized drop of new thermal paste onto the center of the CPU and GPU dies.
  4. Reinstall the heatsink, tightening the screws in a diagonal pattern to spread the paste evenly.

Replacing thermal paste requires disassembling delicate components. Disconnect the battery first, and proceed only if you are comfortable working with bare silicon chips.

  1. Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
  2. Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
  3. If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
  4. If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.
