Problem overview

When upgrading your graphics card or troubleshooting severe display issues, simply uninstalling drivers through the Control Panel often leaves behind residual files and registry keys. Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) forces a complete wipe of all GPU driver components.

Common causes

  • Switching from an NVIDIA GPU to an AMD GPU (or vice versa)
  • Fixing severe stuttering, crashing, or driver timeouts
  • Removing corrupted driver files that cause installation errors

Solution 1: Prepare and boot into Safe Mode

Running DDU in standard Windows mode is not recommended, as background services may prevent files from being deleted.

  1. Download the latest version of DDU from the official Wagnardsoft website.
  2. Extract the downloaded archive to a folder on your desktop.
  3. Before proceeding, download the fresh graphics driver installer you intend to use later.
  4. Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode. You can also open DDU in normal mode and use its built-in restart to Safe Mode prompt.
Caution

Disconnect your PC from the internet (unplug the Ethernet cable or disable Wi-Fi) before running DDU. This stops Windows Update from automatically downloading drivers during the process.

Solution 2: Run DDU and clean drivers

  1. Once in Safe Mode, launch Display Driver Uninstaller.exe.
  2. In the right-hand panel, select GPU from the “Select device type” dropdown.
  3. Select your current GPU manufacturer (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel) from the second dropdown.
  4. Click the Clean and restart button in the top left.
  5. Wait for the process to finish. DDU will automatically reboot your PC into normal Windows mode.

Solution 3: Install the new driver

  1. Once Windows loads, your display will look stretched or low-resolution. This is normal.
  2. Locate the driver installer you downloaded earlier.
  3. Run the installer as an administrator and follow the on-screen prompts to install the fresh driver.
  4. Reconnect to the internet only after the installation is complete.

Confirm the result

  1. Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
  2. Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
  3. If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
  4. If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.

Questions about this fix

Is DDU safe to use?

Yes, DDU is widely recommended by the PC building and gaming community. However, you should always create a system restore point before using it.

Can I use DDU for Intel integrated graphics?

Yes, DDU supports removing Intel graphics drivers, which is useful when switching from an Intel iGPU to a dedicated graphics card.
