Fix HDMI Port Not Working on PC or Laptop

Problem overview

You plug an HDMI cable into your computer, but the connected monitor or TV says “No Signal” or does not display an image. The port appears completely unresponsive.

Common causes

  • Selecting the wrong display mode in Windows
  • Using a damaged or outdated HDMI cable
  • Plugging into the motherboard instead of the GPU
  • Graphics driver conflicts (especially on Optimus laptops)

Solution 1: Check Windows display settings

  1. Ensure the monitor is turned on and set to the correct HDMI input.
  2. Press Win + P on your keyboard to open the Project menu.
  3. Select Duplicate or Extend. If it is set to PC screen only, the HDMI port will output nothing.
  4. Right-click the desktop and select Display settings to see if Windows detects a second monitor.
Expert Tip

If you are using a 4K monitor at 60Hz, ensure your cable is rated for High Speed (HDMI 2.0 or better). Older cables lack the bandwidth and will result in a black screen.

Solution 2: Update graphics drivers

  1. Right-click the Start menu and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters.
  3. Right-click your graphics card and select Update driver.
  4. Alternatively, download the latest drivers directly from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
  5. Restart the computer and plug the HDMI cable back in.

Solution 3: Isolate laptop iGPU routing

  1. On gaming laptops with NVIDIA Optimus or AMD Switchable Graphics, the HDMI port is often hardwired to the integrated GPU (iGPU) rather than the dedicated card.
  2. Ensure you have not disabled the integrated graphics in the BIOS or Device Manager.
  3. Update the drivers for the Intel or AMD integrated graphics, as the HDMI port relies on them to function.
Critical

If you trip over an HDMI cable while it is plugged in, it can easily snap the internal pins or rip the port completely off the motherboard. Inspect the port physically for bent pins.

Confirm the result

  1. Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
  2. Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
  3. If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
  4. If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.

If you have a dedicated graphics card, the motherboard ports are often disabled. Plug the cable into the GPU instead.
