Your screen displays strange visual glitches, such as checkerboard patterns, flashing colors, or horizontal lines. These artifacts typically point to memory corruption, unstable clock speeds, or a failing Graphics Processing Unit (GPU).
Common causes
- Corrupted or outdated graphics drivers
- Defective or loose display cables
- Overheating GPU core or VRAM modules
- Hardware degradation of the graphics card
Solution 1: Isolate the display and cable
- Swap the display cable (HDMI or DisplayPort) for a known working one.
- Try plugging the computer into a different monitor or a TV.
- If the artifacts vanish, the issue lies with the original cable or monitor, not your GPU.
- If the artifacts persist, proceed to troubleshoot the graphics card.
You can also try taking a screenshot using Win + Shift + S. If the artifacts do not appear in the saved image, the problem is almost certainly physical (monitor or cable).
Solution 2: Clean install the graphics driver
- Download the latest drivers for your GPU and the Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) utility.
- Boot Windows into Safe Mode.
- Run DDU and select Clean and restart.
- Once back in normal Windows, install the fresh drivers you downloaded earlier.
Solution 3: Underclock the GPU memory
- Download and install a tuning utility like MSI Afterburner.
- Reduce the Memory Clock slider by
-100MHzto-200MHz. - Click the checkmark to apply the settings.
- Run a GPU stress test like FurMark to see if the artifacts are resolved under load.
Running synthetic stress tests like FurMark places extreme thermal load on your graphics card. Only run them for short durations to verify stability.
Confirm the result
- Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
- Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
- If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
- If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.
