Problem overview
Apps get stuck on the ‘Download pending’ message in the Google Play Store. The progress bar never appears, and updates or new installations fail to start.
Common causes
- Corrupted Google Play Store cache
- Multiple large apps attempting to update simultaneously
- Insufficient storage space on the device
- Incorrect date and time settings disrupting Google server communication
Solution 1: Force stop and clear Play Store cache
- Open Settings and tap Apps.
- Tap See all apps and find Google Play Store.
- Tap Force stop.
- Go to Storage & cache and tap Clear cache.
- Return to the app list, find Google Play Services, and repeat the process to clear its cache.
- Open the Play Store and attempt the download again.
If clearing the cache does not work, return to the Play Store app settings and select Clear storage. You will need to accept the Play Store terms of service again when you reopen it.
Solution 2: Check storage space
- Open Settings and navigate to Storage.
- Verify you have at least 10% of your total storage available.
- If space is low, tap Free up space or manually delete unused apps and large files.
Solution 3: Verify date and time settings
- Go to Settings > System > Date & time.
- Ensure Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically are toggled on.
- If the time is incorrect, toggle the settings off, manually set the correct time, and then toggle them back on.
Confirm the result
- Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
- Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
- If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
- If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.
