Problem overview

Google Drive for Desktop fails to upload or download files to your local machine. The synchronization process hangs indefinitely, displaying errors or remaining stuck on a “Syncing” status.

Common causes

  • Temporary network interruptions freezing the sync engine
  • Stale authentication tokens in Windows Credential Manager
  • Reaching your Google Drive storage quota limit
  • Corrupted local cache files for the Drive application

Solution 1: Pause and resume sync

  1. Click the Google Drive icon in your system tray or menu bar.
  2. Click the gear icon in the top right of the Drive panel.
  3. Select Pause syncing from the menu.
  4. Wait 30 seconds.
  5. Click the gear icon again and select Resume syncing.
Expert Tip

Restarting the sync process often clears minor glitches without requiring any configuration changes.

Solution 2: Clear credentials from Windows Credential Manager

  1. Press Win + S and search for Credential Manager.
  2. Click on Windows Credentials.
  3. Scroll down to the Generic Credentials section.
  4. Locate entries starting with Google Drive.
  5. Click on each entry, select Remove, and confirm.
  6. Restart Google Drive and sign in again when prompted.

Solution 3: Quit and relaunch the application

  1. Click the Google Drive icon in your system tray.
  2. Click the gear icon and select Quit.
  3. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  4. Check for any remaining processes named GoogleDrive.exe and click End task.
  5. Open the Start menu, search for Google Drive, and launch it again.

Solution 4: Check available storage quota

  1. Open your web browser and navigate to drive.google.com.
  2. Look at the storage indicator in the bottom left corner.
  3. If your storage is full, empty the Google Drive Trash.
  4. Delete large files or purchase additional Google One storage to resume syncing.

Solution 5: Sign out, reinstall, and clear cache

  1. Click the Drive tray icon, go to Settings, and select Disconnect account.
  2. Press Win + I to open Settings and go to Apps.
  3. Locate Google Drive, click it, and select Uninstall.
  4. Press Win + R, type %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Google\, and press Enter.
  5. Delete the DriveFS folder to remove corrupted local cache files.
  6. Download the latest version from Google and install it.
Critical

Deleting the local cache folder will force Google Drive to rebuild its index from scratch, which may take hours for very large file repositories.

Confirm the result

  1. Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
  2. Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
  3. If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
  4. If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.

Questions about this fix

Why is Google Drive stuck on 'Processing files'?

This happens when the cache contains corrupted database files or when syncing deeply nested folders with extremely long file paths.

Will reinstalling Google Drive delete my cloud files?

No, uninstalling the desktop app does not affect files already stored in the cloud on Google servers.
