Problem overview
Your computer emits a loud grinding, rattling, or ticking noise when powered on. This annoying sound usually indicates an obstruction in the fan blades or a mechanical failure of the fan’s internal bearing.
Common causes
- Cables sagging and clipping the fan blades
- Heavy dust buildup throwing the fan off balance
- Dried up lubricant inside sleeve-bearing fans
- Complete bearing failure
Solution 1: Identify the noisy fan and clear obstructions
- Open your PC case while it is running.
- Carefully touch the center hub of each case fan (not the blades) to slow it down briefly. If the noise stops, you have found the culprit.
- Check the immediate area around the noisy fan. Ensure no zip ties, fan cables, or PSU cables are resting against the blades.
- Turn off the PC and use compressed air to blast away heavy dust clumps on the blades.
You can use software like HWiNFO64 to manually ramp the RPM of your case, CPU, and GPU fans one by one to safely identify which fan is failing.
Solution 2: Lubricate the fan bearing (Desktop fans only)
- Remove the noisy fan from the case.
- Peel back the sticker located on the rear center hub of the fan.
- Remove the small rubber plug (if present) to expose the bearing axle.
- Place a single drop of light machine oil (like sewing machine oil) onto the axle. Do not use WD-40.
- Spin the fan manually to work the oil in, replace the plug, and reapply the sticker.
Solution 3: Replace the fan
- If lubricating fails, or if the fan is in a laptop, the bearing is permanently shot.
- Check the size of the desktop fan (usually 120mm or 140mm) or find the exact OEM part number for your laptop fan.
- Unscrew the broken fan, unplug it from the motherboard header, and install the new replacement.
If the failing fan is attached to your power supply (PSU), do not open the unit to fix the fan. Replace the entire power supply immediately, as PSU internals carry lethal voltages.
Confirm the result
- Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
- Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
- If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
- If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.
