Problem overview

When you try to open the EA App or launch an EA game from Steam, the launcher gets stuck on an infinite loading screen or opens as a completely blank dark window. The interface never loads, preventing you from playing your games.

Common causes

  • Corrupted cache files stored by the EA App
  • The EABackgroundService crashing or failing to start
  • Antivirus software blocking EA services from communicating online
  • Incomplete updates for the EA App

Solution 1: Delete the EA App cache

  1. Close the EA App completely (check the system tray).
  2. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
  3. Type %localappdata%\Electronic Arts\EA Desktop and press Enter.
  4. Locate the folder named Cache and delete it entirely.
  5. Relaunch the EA App.
Expert Tip

You can also use the official App Recovery tool by going to the Start menu, finding the EA folder, and selecting App Recovery.

Solution 2: Repair the EA App installation

  1. Press Win + I to open Settings.
  2. Navigate to Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Search for the EA app in the list.
  4. Click the three dots next to it and select Modify.
  5. When the installer window opens, click Repair.
  6. Wait for the process to finish and restart your computer.

Solution 3: Check the EA Background Service

  1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Scroll down to find the EABackgroundService.
  3. If its status is not running, right-click it and select Start.
  4. Right-click it again, select Properties, and change the Startup type to Automatic.
  5. Click Apply and OK.
Caution

If the service continues to crash, you may need to completely uninstall the EA App, reboot, and reinstall a fresh copy from the official EA website.

Confirm the result

  1. Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
  2. Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
  3. If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
  4. If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.

Questions about this fix

Can I go back to using Origin instead?

EA has discontinued Origin for most users, forcing the switch to the EA App.

Why does clearing cache fix launcher issues?
