Problem overview

You connect a monitor via DisplayPort, but the screen remains black, flashes intermittently, or fails to wake up from sleep mode, despite the PC running normally.

Common causes

  • Uncertified, low-quality DisplayPort cables
  • Mismatched DisplayPort versions in the monitor OSD
  • The Pin 20 power issue shorting the GPU
  • Stale display cache in Windows

Solution 1: Cycle power and clear display cache

  1. Turn off your PC and monitor.
  2. Unplug the power cable from the monitor entirely for 60 seconds.
  3. Disconnect and firmly reconnect the DisplayPort cable.
  4. Plug the monitor back in and turn on the PC.
  5. If the screen is still blank, press Win + Ctrl + Shift + B to restart the Windows graphics driver instantly.
Expert Tip

Unlike HDMI, DisplayPort cables have a physical locking mechanism. You must press the small latch down before pulling the cable out, or you will destroy the port.

Solution 2: Adjust monitor DP version settings

  1. Use the physical buttons on your monitor to open the On-Screen Display (OSD).
  2. Navigate to the System or Input settings.
  3. Look for a setting labeled DisplayPort Version or DP Mode.
  4. If it is set to DP 1.4, toggle it down to DP 1.2 or DP 1.1 to maximize compatibility.
  5. Save the setting and see if an image appears.

Solution 3: Address the Pin 20 issue

  1. If your PC refuses to boot properly while the DisplayPort cable is connected, but boots fine without it, you likely have a bad cable.
  2. Purchase a VESA-certified DisplayPort cable. Certified cables have Pin 20 physically disabled, preventing dangerous voltage back-feeding into your graphics card.
  3. Connect the new certified cable to the GPU and monitor.
Caution

Continuing to use a non-certified cable that supplies power over Pin 20 can permanently destroy the DisplayPort logic chip on your expensive graphics card.

Confirm the result

  1. Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
  2. Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
  3. If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
  4. If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.
