Temporarily Disable Driver Signature Enforcement in Windows
Install a trusted legacy test driver for one Windows session without leaving persistent Test Mode or weakening boot security.

Problem overview
Windows blocks a legacy or development driver because it does not have a trusted digital signature. Kernel drivers have extensive system access, so bypassing this check should be a last resort—not a routine installation step.
Do not continue for a driver downloaded from a forum, file-sharing site, shortened link, or unknown publisher. An unsigned kernel driver can fully compromise Windows before security software starts.
Step 1: Look for a signed alternative
- Search Windows Update under Advanced options → Optional updates → Driver updates.
- Check the exact device model and hardware ID on the manufacturer’s official support site.
- Prefer a current signed driver for a compatible model or operating-system release.
- Create a restore point and export or note the currently installed driver version before testing a replacement.
Step 2: Verify the unsigned package
Confirm who produced the driver, why it is unsigned, and whether the publisher provides a checksum or reproducible source. Scan the extracted package and inspect the .inf, .sys, and catalog files. If the publisher or purpose is unclear, stop.
Step 3: Disable enforcement for one startup
- Hold Shift while selecting Restart.
- Choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart.
- Press

- Restart Windows normally as soon as testing is complete. Signature enforcement will be active again.
Step 4: Confirm and roll back
- Open Device Manager, inspect the device, and confirm it starts without a warning icon.
- Test only the hardware function the driver is meant to provide.
- If Windows becomes unstable, disconnect the device, boot Safe Mode, and use Device Manager → Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver or uninstall the test driver.
- Confirm Windows Security and Secure Boot remain enabled after recovery.
Persistent testsigning or integrity-check bypasses are intended for controlled driver-development systems. They are not a safe fix for a normal personal computer.

Is disabling signature enforcement dangerous?

Does the temporary setting stay disabled?
No. Signature enforcement returns after the next normal restart. Do not enable persistent Test Mode just to install an old consumer driver.
