Problem overview

Google Chrome is known to consume excessive CPU and memory resources, which can slow down your entire system, cause the browser to become unresponsive, or drain your laptop battery rapidly.

Common causes

  • Too many active tabs running complex web applications
  • Resource-heavy or malfunctioning extensions
  • Hardware acceleration causing graphics processing issues
  • Background apps continuing to run after Chrome is closed

Solution 1: Identify resource hogs with Task Manager

Chrome has its own built-in Task Manager to identify exactly what is using your resources.

  1. Open Chrome and press Shift + Esc to open the Chrome Task Manager.
  2. Click the Memory footprint or CPU column headers to sort by highest usage.
  3. Identify any specific tabs or extensions consuming excessive resources.
  4. Select the offending item and click End process.
Expert Tip

If a specific extension consistently uses high CPU, consider finding a lighter alternative or disabling it when not in use.

Solution 2: Enable Memory Saver

Chrome’s Memory Saver feature reclaims memory from tabs you aren’t currently using.

  1. Open Chrome and click the three dots in the top-right corner.
  2. Go to Settings, then click Performance in the left sidebar.
  3. Toggle on Memory Saver.
  4. If you have sites that must always remain active, click Add next to “Always keep these sites active” and enter their URLs.

Solution 3: Disable hardware acceleration

Hardware acceleration offloads tasks to your GPU, but buggy graphics drivers can cause CPU spikes.

  1. Open Chrome Settings.
  2. Click System in the left sidebar.
  3. Toggle off Use hardware acceleration when available.
  4. Click the Relaunch button that appears.

Confirm the result

  1. Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
  2. Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
  3. If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
  4. If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.

Questions about this fix

Why does Chrome use so much RAM?

Chrome runs every tab and extension in a separate process to prevent a single crash from taking down the whole browser.

What is Memory Saver?

Memory Saver frees up memory from inactive tabs, keeping active tabs running smoothly.
