Fix Optical CD/DVD Drive Not Reading Discs
Troubleshoot a CD or DVD drive that spins up but fails to read media.
Confirmed working on: Windows 10 · Windows 11
Before you begin
Problem overview
You insert a disc into your CD/DVD drive, hear it spin up, but Windows fails to read the contents. The drive may prompt you to insert a disc even when one is already in the tray.
Common causes
- Dust or smudges on the laser lens
- Loose internal SATA data or power cables
- Corrupted registry UpperFilters or LowerFilters
- A failing laser diode
Solution 1: Clean the laser lens
- Eject the disc tray and turn off the computer.
- Locate the small glass laser lens on the tray assembly.
- Dip a cotton swab lightly in 90%+ isopropyl alcohol.
- Gently wipe the lens in a circular motion.
- Allow it to air dry for a minute before testing a known working, scratch-free disc.
You can also purchase a commercial lens cleaning disc, which has small brushes built into the bottom, to safely clean the lens while the drive is running.
Solution 2: Remove registry filter drivers
- Press
Win + R, typeregedit, and press Enter. - Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} - Look for values in the right pane named UpperFilters or LowerFilters.
- Right-click and delete them.
- Restart your computer.
Solution 3: Check internal connections
- Shut down the PC and open the side panel.
- Locate the optical drive and trace the SATA data and SATA power cables.
- Unplug both cables from the back of the drive and the motherboard.
- Reconnect them firmly, ensuring they click into place.
- Boot Windows, open Device Manager, right-click the drive under DVD/CD-ROM drives, and select Uninstall device, then reboot to reinstall.
Do not look directly at the laser lens while the drive is powered on. The laser operates at frequencies that can cause permanent eye damage, even if it appears dim.
Confirm the result
- Repeat the exact action that originally triggered the problem.
- Confirm the original error or symptom is gone and no new warning has appeared.
- If the guide changed a driver, service, package, or system setting, restart once and test again.
- If the result is worse or unexpected, stop. Reverse only the last change using its documented restore option; if none is documented, use your backup or qualified support.
Questions about this fix
Why does the drive spin but not show up in Windows?
This is often a corrupted registry filter driver blocking communication with the OS.
Can a dirty lens cause read errors?
Yes, dust on the laser lens scatters the beam, preventing it from reading the microscopic pits on the disc.
