Fix Apps Crashing and Freezing on Android

Problem overview

Applications on your Android device freeze, close unexpectedly, or display an ‘App keeps stopping’ error message. This can affect a single app or multiple apps simultaneously.

Common causes

• Outdated or bugged Android System WebView
• Corrupted app cache or data
• Lack of available RAM or storage space
• Pending system or application updates

Solution 1: Update Android System WebView

1. Open the Google Play Store.
2. Search for Android System WebView.
3. If an update is available, tap Update.
4. Search for Google Chrome and update it as well, as it shares WebView components.
5. Restart your phone.

Solution 2: Clear app cache and data

1. Open Settings > Apps > See all apps.
2. Locate the app that keeps crashing and tap it.
3. Select Storage & cache.
4. Tap Clear cache.
5. If the app still crashes, return to this screen and tap Clear storage (Note: this deletes your login data and settings for the app).

Solution 3: Boot into Safe Mode

1. Press and hold the Power button.
2. Tap and hold the Power off option on the screen.
3. Confirm the prompt to reboot into Safe mode.
4. Test the device. If the crashing stops, a third-party app you installed recently is likely causing system instability.
5. Restart the phone to exit Safe Mode and uninstall suspicious apps.
